British
8 Pall Mall, London SW1Y 5NG
With a bar designed by Russell Sage, who was behind the Zetter Townhouse, and a head chef who's worked under Ducasse and Alain Roux, this is a brasserie serving "French/Anglo food". Expect a charcuterie bar and a Champagne balcony, along with a "Champagne Angel" on hand to pass on fizz tips. The design of the St James bar also aims to mimic Coco Chanel's 1920's Paris apartment.
9 Camp Road, Wimbledon Common, London SW19 4UN
Michelin starred chef Claude Bosi has joined up with his brother to set up this pub/restaurant in the heart of wealthy Wimbledon. This has a more British state of affairs from a place that steers more towards restaurant than pub.
DUKES, St. James's Place, London SW1A 1NY
The five starred Dukes Hotel has coaxed Michelin-starred chef Nigel Mendham from the Samling Hotel in the Lake district. He'll be focusing on classically English food and his stated aim is to "keep technology out of the kitchen."
1st Floor, Design Museum, 28 Shad Thames, London SE1 2YD
St Martin's Courtyard, off Long Acre London WC2E 9AB
Beloved by London expats down in Lewes where it first opened, Bill's Produce Store is a deli/grocers where you can also sit and eat. Bought up by Caprice Holdings' Richard Caring, this massive Covent Garden branch in the area between Long Acre and St Martin's Lane also offers takeaway food.
28-32 St. Martin's Court, London WC2N 4AL
Fans of counter dining have long known that one of the best lunches in town was to be had up dining up at the bar in Sheekeys, if you could get a table. Happily the move sideways into an neighbouring building has allowed Sheekeys to create a brand new Oyster bar while seemlessly giving it the Sheekey magic touch.
The Savoy Hotel, Strand, London WC2R 0EU
The main restaurant at The Savoy is one of three in the hotel and the real crown jewel. There's a 1920s feel to the room and classic French cuisine on the menu.
1 Cale Street, London SW3 3QT
Hotel and restaurant owner Mark Fuller of Sanctum Soho bought up the Notting Hill fish and chip restaurant in 2006 with the intention of restoring it to its former glory. That done, they've expanded the Geales brand and have bought up Tom Aiken's former chipper Tom's Place in Chelsea. Expect 'fresh fish, no frills and fabulous service'.
127-129 Parkway, London NW1 7PS
Camden is better known for its independents, rather than celebrity restaurants such as this one from Gordon Ramsay, which is just one of a whopping 28 in London that he owns. It's an all-day bistro with a relaxed setting. The mostly European and British menu features dishes such as spicy tuna tartare, fish and chips and steaks from the grill.
69 - 71 Dean Street, London W1D 3SE
Part of Nick Jones' Soho House empire, this is a hotel and restaurant space in Dean Street. This 'glorious cream Georgian building, originally home to the Gargolye Club' (their words), has 41 bedrooms alongside a traditional English dining room, seating 120. The all-day menu includes British favourites as well as afternoon tea, weekend brunch and weekly Sunday roast.
243 Brompton Road, London SW3 2EP
Knightsbridge stalwart Brasseries St Quentin is reinvented and reopened as the Brompton Bar and Grill. Die-hard fans of the old brasserie might be upset after nearly 30 years of restaurant history was thrown out with the revamp, but there's a lot to recommend the fresh new look and menu it seems.
Serpentine Road, Hyde Park, London W2 2UH
Ben and Hugo, the schoolfriends behind Benugo, further expand their public buildings and spaces empire with the opening of this Hyde Park bar and cafe. They lay great store by their suppliers, who've been working with their sandwich bar chain for years, but early reviewers weren't impressed.
24 York Way, London N1 9AA
Located in the gradually up and coming area of King's Cross, The Fellow offers the usual gastropub fare. You'll also find a handy roof terrace if you want to, understandably, escape from King's Cross street level.
Rainville Road, London W6 9HA
This longstanding pub in Hammersmith with a large beer garden overlooking the Thames has had a gastro makeover from the Realpubs crowd.
