James Donnelly has just launched Donnelly’s, an extended pop up until Christmas at the famous Sun & 13 Cantons on Beak Street in Soho. Expect cracking plates of proper British fare – really tasty, beautifully sourced, and cooked with dollops of ‘posh pub’ vibes thanks to previous Head Chef roles at places such as The Palmerston. James honed his skills latterly under the watchful eye of Tom Aikens.
The menu oozes with charm, featuring Snacks, Mains, Sides, and Sweets. You’ll find ‘snacks’ featuring stunners such as Graceburn cheese, aubergine and thyme toast next to Elderflower pickled mackerel, tomato bread and dill. Then moving on to mains, headliners such as Damson smoked and braised feather-blade steak, with chervil and pickled chillies nestles comfortably alongside Pickled cucumber, roasted Jersey Royals, watermelon, and cumin breadcrumbs. Desserts are exquisite – Salted chocolate tart, or Lemon Panna Cotta, or Port and vanilla poached plum with creme anglaise and shortbread. There is plenty of choice for veggies and plant-based food fans.
Booking is strongly recommended as this is one of central London’s busiest and buzziest pubs. James is also looking ahead to Christmas, where he is able to cater for groups of up to 40 in the basement and smaller tables upstairs.
Donnelly’s is relaxed, modern British cooking with a huge focus on and respect for British provenance – from cheese, to meat, to fish. James is very proud to support small producers and suppliers such as Todenham Manor Farm, Montogomery’s, Forest Coalpit Farm in Abergavenny and Hackney Gelato.
