Helix restaurant and Iris bar at the Gherkin are London's latest high-rise drinking and dining spots

Helix restaurant and Iris bar at the Gherkin are London's latest high-rise drinking and dining spots

What: Helix and Iris at The Gherkin

In a nutshell: A new modern British restaurant and bar from Searcys at the top of the Gherkin

Summing it all up: It’s all change at the top of the Gherkin as Searcys revamp the food and drink offering with a new restaurant, Helix, and a new bar, Iris (with a space open to the public for the first time).

The low-down

London has no shortage of sky-high dining options these days, but the Gherkin was one of the city’s originals and it’s now been given a complete refresh by Searcy’s with the launch of a new restaurant called Helix. The name is a reference to the helix shape at the pinnacle of the tower where the restaurant will reside on level 39, offering some amazing views.

In charge of the food is executive chef Daniel Loftin, who’s offering a modern British menu of seasonal dishes:

  • English asparagus, Dorset crab, grapefruit, soy and sesame
  • Cornish mackerel, rock oyster, rhubarb, cucumber, dandelion
  • South Coast turbot, grelot onion, peas, broad beans, yoghurt, caviar
  • Rhug Estate Welsh lamb, bell pepper, aubergine, courgette, feta
  • Vanilla burnt cream, apricot, shortbread

Meanwhile, up on level 40 is the new Iris bar, and the big news is that this is now open to the public – it was a members' club before. Here you’ll find a big Champagne and English sparkling wine selection as well as cocktails such as The Little White Bird – Violet liqueur, vanilla vodka, lychee, elderflower, lemon and English sparkling wine – and the Jack the Ripper, Mediterranean herbs vodka, beetroot juice, tomato, lemon, Worcester sauce, Mexican sauce.
