Les Deux Salons

The latest venture from the people behind Arbutus and Wild Honey

Since they launched Arbutus in 2006 and Wild Honey in 2007 - picking up a Michelin star for each - owners Will Smith and Anthony Demetre have been looking for a further outlet for their talents. They have opened at this site off Trafalgar Square which serves classis brasserie food with a London twist across two floors, is open all day, including a private dining room and counter dining.

Great food, shame about the decor

Brasseries in France seem to divide into two camps. There are the romantic little ones with food that surprises and delights and there are the smoked glass near-the-station McBrasseries that churn out steak frites and keep puddings in rotating glass cases.

I thought Les Deux Salons was the former dressed as the latter. The food was fabulous but the decor made me feel like I was waiting for a Eurostar near the Gare du Nord.

Our group of four was put at the back in a kind of little mezzanine area, a sort of naughty step for two tables. The banquette was made of green plastic and the panelled walls seemed to be stained with Cheryl Cole's burgundy hair dye. There were faux-foxed, granite-grey mirrors everywhere and the wall lights seemed to be illuminated by the chilly light of energy saving bulbs.

It didn't feel intimate or romantic which is a shame because the food was truly special. The ravioli starter seemed to be made of some special kind of pasta that was nicer than any I can remember. The pork main course looked as pale, fatty and ugly as Gordon Brown but was somehow delicious and for pudding the floating island was little short of perfect.

Great food. Really, properly, great food ... but I didn't like the atmosphere. Maybe it's just a naughty step thing; the rest of the place seemed a bit warmer. We paid £65 each and it was well worth it for the best food I've had in a long time. Next time I'll ask for a table in the main salon.

NICE

I came to this new french restaurant/brasserie on Thursday and was quite suprised with the decor which takes you to Paris. Service was ok. Had a few cocktails before dinner by J, the guy on the bar, and they were excellent. Food was nice - the bb chicken - will be back for more.

excellent meal

We went for a meal here on the first day of opening. We were called before hand to confirm our booking and this was only the start of the excellent service. The staff were very attentive, despite a busy restaurant. The food was more than a match for the other restaurants in the chain with far more choice on the menu. We ordered the veal from the new charcoal grill menu which was the best we have ever eaten, dividing it between us was not a problem. The menu is not all written in french and anything we did not understand was explained to us fully. We enjoyed the meal so much we are already planning another dinner with further friends and family.

Arbutus it is not!!

this restaurant is really not ready to be open, on entering the restaurant our booking was not known even though we had booked a week earlier through their website. The food was acceptable but when ordering a veal chop for 2 persons and being expected to carve it ourselves was very dissappointing, as for desert most are in written in french and when asking for a description everything was 'like a cake'the service is poor and staff unknowledgeable. I would not recommend this restauarant at all, we visited when there was a 50% deal off food and the bill still came to £135 [although there were errors on bill] they charge £39 for an ordinary bottle of Sancerre...around the same as many top restaurants in london which is something this needs a lot of work to compete with
