Magdalen

French dining in Southwark

When chef James Faulks, formerly of feted gastropub the Anchor and Hope, not to mention The Fat Duck, opened his first independent venture with wife Emma, expectations were high. Happily the cosiness of this venue together with an excellent menu, confident cooking and a well sourced wine list have made this a Londoner favourite.

"...cooking of this style and quality - accessible, unpretentious, terrific cooking; cooking of warmth, flavour and spirit, not perfect but always enjoyable, this is not something you find in every neighbourhood." READ REVIEW

"In a refreshing departure from the austere, meat-and-no-veg school of modern British cooking, Magdalen's main courses are served appropriately garnished. And they're put together brilliantly." READ REVIEW

"Hot foie gras with caramelised blood oranges, served with a glass of chilled port we didn't realise we'd ordered (perhaps the acoustic isn't so hot after all), drew a hushed, "My God, this is awesome. It's like a silky, buttery mousse - and what a combination with the oranges. Perfect balance."" READ REVIEW

"It’s a style that has all the merits and virtues of a softly spoken craft: careful, handmade victuals, more physics and skilled labour than inspiration and magic. It’s food fit for its purpose of wholesome enjoyment, cooking that would blush at being called art or being accused of having a soul." READ REVIEW

I consider myself very lucky to have this as my local, so I eat here often. The menu changes frequently, with new dishes introduced daily and although there is a limited choice of dishes, there are always new surprises. Last week's menu included rabbit, hare and venison all of which were tempting. Instead I chose the veal kidneys, served with beautiful mashed potato and a rich sauce. The quality of the ingredients as well as the cooking are exceptional. The service also deserves recognition, it's always friendly and efficient.
