"It's hard to make exceptional pasta – it's by definition hard to make exceptional comfort food – but Zucca does, in this instance with a dish of rigatoni, courgettes and pecorino." READ REVIEW

"It was at the main-course stage, however, that we really began to understand the fuss. A generous chop of (English) veal came perfectly seasoned, impeccably timed and full of flavour." READ REVIEW

Two Discoveries. Zucca and their Octopus

We got off at Bermondsey Station by mistake and arrived late having tubed back to London Bridge and walked from there. We arrived late to a packed restaurant. No clipboard Nazi, Armani suited, preening greeter here just a warm and genuine welcome and 30 seconds later a table, a glass of prosecco and dynamite sour dough.

The service was efficient, friendly, knowledgeable and overseen by the boss who knows his craft, both front of house and kitchen. The food was rustic and simple. Great ingredients cooked to perfection and a maximum of three flavours to a plate. Zucca fritti (pumpkin) sounded weird, tasted amazing and cost £3. That's not a typo. I could have just eaten that all night but didn't. My wife's Goats cheese that I would normally get to share only crossed the table when I threatened a shoe embargo. Our shared San Daniele had me sharing in the same way I used to share things with my elder sister when I was nine.

My veal chop was generous, tender, brilliantly seasoned and carefully tended with lemon juice. Normally octopus for me is like eating a wet suit and I regret the effort it takes to put in the mouth. My wife's octopus was charred and served as a whole tentacle. I don't want to spoil the surprise if you go there because the grilled cephalopod was indeed a revelation, worth the journey all on its own or even another pair of shoes.

A plate of superbly conditioned Italian cheeses followed accompanied by fig jam and more marvellous sourdough.

3 starters, 2 mains, 4 glasses and a bottle of wine (£40),a tutored tasting of them, 2 mineral waters and cheese for less than £60 a head not including a tip. They don't presume to steal a gratuity from you here by sneaking it onto the bill. Its no gamble for them though, give great service get great tip. And we can still afford to take a taxi next time and be on time.
