José Pizarro's Spanish restaurant in Bermondsey

José Pizarro's tapas bar José has received glowing reviews and now he turns his hand to a more traditional dining affair. He's taken over the Bermondsey Kitchen site and as well as offering seasonal Spanish food he's opened London's first Cava bar. Pizarro seats 40 people, with a private dining option and a communal table in front of the bar both available. Expect bigger dishes with an emphasis on sharing.

What Jose and maitre d' Herve unfailingly give their customers is a vibrant, warm experience. Firt in Jose up the road, now in Pizarro.

Starts with the interior. Sumptuous in its combo of ancient Spain and modernist Europe, dark buckled cupboards, curved Scandi chairs, a long communal table, secluded booths. Lighting perfectly pitched. You feel at home. Or in the home you'd like to have.

Continues with the welcome. Lovely knowledgeable staff, genuinely pleased to see you.

Delivers a menu short enough to trust. Proven starters. The famed croquetas etc, new stuff every day. Then silence-inducing succulent Iberico lomo. But the salt cod - oh my sweet goodness, the astonishing silvery glistening flakes of it under a crispy skin...

This is a wondrous, warm local restaurant with exceptional produce and production. Of course, as a local I shouldn't be telling you this. No booking means you'll probably steal my place.
