J Sheekey Oyster Bar

The London institution branches out

Fans of counter dining have long known that one of the best lunches in town was to be had up dining up at the bar in Sheekeys, if you could get a table. Happily the move sideways into an neighbouring building has allowed Sheekeys to create a brand new Oyster bar while seemlessly giving it the Sheekey magic touch.

"...you can spend four hours there, as we did on Saturday night, sipping fizz from saucers, trying a few wines by the glass as you follow your tastebuds and your nose... Time rushes into a vortex of pleasure and animation in the dusky light of the bar." READ REVIEW

"It’s bang next to the old, straight-line bar, and while it does a great job of relieving some of the strain on an unfeasibly popular restaurant at busy times, I suppose it does fractionally diminish the thrill one used to get at sneaking on to one of the precious spare stools at the old original." "It was bitterly disappointing. Sheekey's Oyster Bar is a dream of a venue – chic, buzzing, convivial. The food, though the portions are small, is actually fine. You want to love it all. So how can they be so slapdash about temperatures?" READ REVIEW

Good atmosphere, disappointing food

My partner and I had lunch here on a weekend following a recommendation from a friend. The atmosphere was good, although the small alcove where we sat, between the reception area and the larger room at the end was not as enjoyable.

I wish I could say that I had a great meal but the simple fact is that the quality of the food does not justify the high prices. The zuchini flower was not cooked properly, the mozzarella was dry and the tomatoes tasted out of date. My Partner's clam bisque was nice but a bit small given the price. The main courses, the breem and lobster tasted rather like rubber and no effort was made with herbs or spices to add any kind of flavour. The meal with two glasses of wine and no coffee cost around £120. There are many places in London where you can enjoy an excellent meal at half the cost. I fear that this place has been popular for so long it has stopped making an effort. Shame.
