Aqua Nueva

Spanish part of the aqua complex on Regent Street...

The spanish restaurant at London's high-profile Aqua restaurant offers both a tapas and a-la-carte menus. Head chef here is Salamancan Alberto Hernandez trained at El Bulli. The selling point here though is the restaurant's two terraces offering fantastic views over central London.

"The skyline is one of the most romantic sights in the world, and on a warm summer’s evening you can sit on the terrace in the gloaming with a glass of pretty good Albariño, nibbling at the tapas 'collection’..." READ REVIEW

"The menu is a promise of fiddliness and front-teeth chewing. I started with an egg yolk in jelly; it was like a big wine gum of pus, only not that nice. It was cheek-puffingly foul." READ REVIEW

"If – and this seems to us to be a big if – they can get the beautiful people in, this fringe-of-Soho, fringe-of-Carnaby Street (but also fringe-of-Oxford Street) spot could become a really happening sort of rendezvous, the sort in which you might film a London episode of Sex and the City." Glamorous surroundings the food now needs to live

Hot Dinners had dinner here on the first Friday of opening week, not a bad time to go to allow this massive new venue to make a favourable first impression. We didn't have the tapas menu, so worked our way through the a-la-carte.

Our verdict? The food is OK, but the space is brilliant. Who could be churlish about a place with three terraces, one of which has its own bar, looking out over central London and with knockout views over the city. Sometimes a restarant is much more than what the kitchen turns out and if Aqua Nueva and Kyoto can draw in the crowds in what was previously both and eating and drinking desert, then it deserves to be a success. Our waiter couldn't have been friendlier - although he could have done with better back-up in the kitchen and bar (we were served with a wrong drink and a wrong dessert) but the chefs need to be as brave as the interior designer.

We'll be back to try both the tapas and the Japanese fare.
