Hidden gastropub in Islington

Having launched as a gastropub to decidedly lukewarm reviews, this Islington venue has just been taken over by five loyal local customers. The menu remains resolutely British, and there's still an impressive list of botled beers, but the preponderance of English wines has been replaced by a more Euro-friendly wine list.

"Mistake — at least for me. It arrived suspiciously baked. There is a difference between cooking birds and turboblasting them to death. It had also had a salt overload that has probably taken years off our lives." READ REVIEW

"Surprisingly, the stand-out dish was the most dull sounding - the roast courgette, tomatoes, wild mushrooms and courgette blossom was exploding with taste, a testament to the quality ingredients." READ REVIEW

"This is one of the few venues in London conscientious enough to note vintage changes on its wine list, a fact typical of the Marquesss attention to detail. We still like it." READ REVIEW

"The menu is short and English. Fennel and cauliflower soup struck a good starting note. A salad of pigeon, mint and peas was also very satisfactory: that bird always seems too bloody or too grey, so the fact that it was perfectly done here speaks well of the kitchen." READ REVIEW

"What is missing in most of these dishes is that touch of the inspired that gives you more than you bargained for. Everything, once touched by human hands, seems reduced to the ordinary instead of being lifted to the extraordinary - be it produce, cooking or presentation. It's a bit... boring." READ REVIEW

"The food here is very good. Well sourced and well cooked and with real flavour. Unfortunately, the service with even a little bit of pressure applied falls to pieces and makes it unlikely that either of us would rush back to return. A great shame." READ REVIEW
