distinctly average

I'm not quite sure how the Kentish Canteen ranks so highly on here. It isn't awful - it's just a slightly above average cafe (despite their protestations otherwise) whereas I had been led to expect better. The greeting was friendly and enthusiastic, the service after that hurried and disinterested. Was served a black pudding side not just cold, but uncooked, and the food was disappointingly mediocre otherwise.

Fab place!!

Had a wonderful roast on Sunday at this modern, hip eaterie. Very good quality and service, nice, smooth atmosphere AND value for money. Will def return.

A Pleasure

I had the pleasure of visiting on December 14th at lunchtime for a birthday celebration. The venue was clean and organised, the staff were excellent, the food had some amazing flavours and to top it off we we giving a free cake to celebrate the birthday. I would go again Fi

Appalling service

This restaurant is extremely disappointing. Ordered two soups with bread and waited over 20 minutes for it. The food finally arrived in a poor state (stale bread, soup slopped down the sides of the bowls). Could barely catch the waitress's attention to complain, even the manager was rude and lazy.
Despite the overall look of the place being trendy and upmarket, practically the entire experience was abysmal - we will not be returning.

Very disappointing- don't go with a baby

What a shame, a place that has so much potential, with good food but appalling service. Very disappointing if you are planning to take a baby or small child. No buggies are allowed in after 12.30pm, and although they have high-chairs, they are not baby friendly at all, getting very upset if your baby drops so much as a crumb. Not welcoming at all, we will not be going again.

Aren't we lucky to have Kentish Canteen......?

We have eaten at Kentish Canteen several times since it opened a couple of months ago. It has always been fabulous, and just what we need as a local eaterie. The food is interesting, high quality and so reasonably priced that I wonder how they can sustain it! We have had friendly, efficient service in a lovely atmosphere; nothing has been too much trouble. I have just booked my department's Christmas Party here in the downstairs room - a wonderful warm space with bags of character and style. Just go and enjoy it!

Kentish Canteen - Good attitude, or not...

I've eaten here three times now and each time have found the food to be overpriced and bland to say the least. I thought it was fantastic, something a little special for Kentish Town was finally opening. Unfortunately, my excitement was short lived. I can only assume it was Wendy(owner) who I met today, she asked me what I thought of the food; I gave my honest opinion. Her response was defensive and argument for price based on 'we're a restaurant, not a cafe'. I of course was fully aware of that, being I'd just sat in the restaurant and eaten there for the third time. The conversation was left unfinished as she gave me a look of doubt and disappointment with regard to my view (a bit like a teacher, telling off a small child for talking in assembly) and no form of goodbye was established either, she simply walked away. Hardly the customer service you'd expect from someone with her knowledge of the restaurant business.

I own a business in Kentish Town with 40 staff. My plan was to hold various events and functions there and give this new establishment some real 'local support'. Unfortunately, after Wendy's poor attitude and clear inability to take on constructive criticism, that won't be happening.

Kentish canteen

After the closure of the disastrous RED, as local residents, we were very excited to find a new restaurant was opening. The food is definitely a better standard than before but the connection between the kitchen and the frontline waiting staff is failing this restaurant miserably. You have to be prepared to wait for as long as it takes to get your meal. At brunchtime today, We witnessed the chef arguing with the manageress in the restaurant area whilst sweating profusely over a waiting meal which did end up going to a table, thankfully not our table. The other manageress calls everyone 'darling' which starts to grate after the third time. On our 2nd visit, she was on her phone to a mate completely oblivious to the fact that most of the tables were waiting for their food.
