Novikov

Russian restaurateur Arkady Novikov's first London restaurant.

Russian restaurateur Arkady Novikov has launched three restaurants in one on this Berkeley site - a restaurant serving Asian seafood, another serving an Italian menu and a 'Far Eastern-themed bar'. Novikov owns a multi-million dollar restaurant empire in Moscow so expect plenty of bling. The chef for the Italian room Stefano Stecca comes via Zafferano and the Brunello restaurant at the Baglioni hotel in Kensington.

"If you are affluent, Novikov is a lot of fun. Millions of pounds have been lavished on the decor. It’s glamorous. It’s rich. If it were a private club, I’d be trying to get in." READ REVIEW

"The real surprise, however, was the food – which was, with one exception, consistently impressive. The quality comes as more a shock, because a pan-Asian menu – by definition – lacks any sort of coherency." READ REVIEW

A work in progress

I ate in the Italian section, which by London standards is massive. It's loud and buzzy full of beautiful people so great for people watching if you enjoy that. The kitchen copes well with the volume both in terms of quality and speed. Unfortunately the service isn't as well marshalled and there's a lot of staff scurrying around arguing with each other. They need to bring in a Maitre D from a major Las Vegas restaurant or the Corbin/King empire who understand service and organisation. They should also re-think the number of dishes 'served at the table' which would reduce the number of staff on the floor and anyway who needs spaghetti served that way, delivered on your own plate is usually fine. A work in progress
