Maze Grill

Gordon Ramsay brings the look of a townhouse kitchen to a New York style grillhouse

Chef Jason Atherton trained at the legendary Spanish restaurant El Bulli and brings the froth and fun he learnt there to this lively spot on Grosvenor Square. Most of the menu is in the form of tasting size dishes giving eaters a chance to put Atherton's full range of culinary skills to the taste test.

"It came with a brace of little cakes called financiers. Foolish, really, the innocent joy one can derive from wolfing down a couple of City moguls. I hope they won't be the only people who can afford to enjoy Mr Atherton's pungently appealing cooking." READ REVIEW

"My friend went for braised short rib of beef, a cut beloved of New Yorkers. Served from its own casserole dish with carrot purée and three mustards, this deliciously flaky, wine-stewed meat was declared "bloody lovely, as rich and dense as a cracking oxtail stew"." READ REVIEW

"Both Jon, who chose Aberdeen Angus sirloin (10oz for £23.50), and Reg, who opted for Hereford bone-in rib-eye (12oz for £23.50), said the steaks they received were the best they could remember eating. Since they are well-travelled chaps it was praise indeed." READ REVIEW

Great steak, shame about the sauce

Maze grill - it does what it says on the tin - great steak - great atmosphere. I went for the Hereford and couldn't fault the quality and taste - on the downside when I requested some English mustard on the side I was gently encouraged to opt for the "3 mustard" sauce instead (at an additional £2) - which turned out to be three varieties of mustard none of which stood up to the quality of the steak - over complicated in their make up and of the wrong consistency. I should have stuck with my initial instincts and insisted on some English.
It would be a shame to come here and try anything other than the great steaks on offer but I was sorely tempted by the offer of lobster and chips which at £27.50 in a high quality restaurant must be worth a shot at some point.

food glorious food

Rarely have I had a better meal than at Maze. From the decor and service, to the food and wine, everything about Maze makes you wish you could afford to eat here every day. If you want a serious treat, there is nowhere I'd recommend more highly.
