National Theatre to open new restaurant, The Green Room

National Theatre to open new restaurant, The Green Room

The Green Room is the latest addition to the National Theatre as part of its current revamp - although it's much more of a standalone restaurant than they've previously launched. This time they're using land that's apparently "awaiting development" behind the NT to build the restaurant that is the next step on from their riverside pop-up Prop Store (this restaurant is planned to stay there for five years).

They've joined up with Coin Street Community Builders to develop the site and it's been designed by architecture graduate Benjamin Marks from a combination of recycled parts and parts that can be recycled for future use. It's also promising a lot of open garden space for next spring.

As for food, the menu has been developed by the NT’s Executive Chef, Simon Flint (formerly Head Chef at The Groucho Club, Le Caprice and The Ivy) and it's being billed as a casual dining restaurant. Dishes will include:

  • Salted rosemary cashew nuts
  • Moons green beer sticks
  • ‘Rostra Dog’ – House special sausage, caramelised onions, house tomato ketchup and cheese sauce
  • Grilled mackerel bruschetta with tomato and chipotle salsa
  • Risotto with chestnut mushrooms, stilton and smoked tomato
  • Grilled calamari with pesto and slow roasted winter vegetables
  • Flat iron steak with green peppercorn sauce and a side
  • Chocolate and caramel baked Alaska
  • Honey layer cake with coffee cream

There will be a soft launch over Christmas to with two for one on all burgers and sloppy joes for groups of two or more from 5th December until mid January (the offer applies to only one burger per person). This includes a kid's sloppy joe or burger (cheapest one free).

The Green Room opens 101 Upper Ground, South Bank, London, SE1 9PP on 5th December. For more information, follow them on Twitter @greenroomSE1
