Mark Hix announces Hix Belgravia with a new Mark's Bar

28/1/12 - Updated with menu info.

Rumours of a new Mark Hix restaurant have been in the mix for a while (and been on our Coming Soon page for a couple of months) but today official word has come down today about the launch of Hix Belgravia.

Opening on February 1 2012 in the Thompson Belgraves Hotel, just off Sloane Street, it looks like the new restaurant is taking its lead from Hix Soho. As with Soho, there'll also be a new Mark's Bar (the Soho spot just won best bar at this year's Observer Food Monthly awards) as well as offering something unique with its cigar garden adorned by artwork from Mat Collishaw.

The restaurant itself is, like the hotel, being designed by Tara Bernerd who's the person responsible for Aspinall's and Cassis. The menu will be inspired by Hix's travels around the world. As he explains: "We've had fun with the menu and are going ‘off piste’ as I like to say, so if you’re expecting my signature British style then think again.”

So that means you can expect Vietnamese chicken broth, Seronio ham, Loch Fyne oysters or Portland crab rosti, among others, for starters.  There's a whole section of "Eggs, pasta and rice" with a particularly enticing creamed polenta with a Burford brown egg and Piedmont truffles. Plenty of steaks and chops are on offer too as well as a "ground rib steak burger...with or without" for £16.75.

Mains include Lobster thermidor baked potato, red sea prawn and pumpkin curry with basmati rice and toasted almonds or rack of Glencoe red deer with sweet and sour sea buckthorn berries.  And finally, there's plenty of desserts, ice creams and sorbets to finish everything off - with the Yorkshire rhubarb jelly with bergamot sorbet and the apple fritters with Kingston Black snow sounding pretty good.

And that's not all folks. Hix Belgravia will not be the only Hix restaurant to open in 2012, as the Tramshed Shoreditch venue is still on for later this year.

Hix Belgravia will open at the Belgraves Hotel in Chesham Place, SW1 on February 1.

Mr Hix wins first prize for great music on his answer phone system - it's early 'Stones -in Soho it's Little Red Rooster and in his new Belgravia restaurant it's Not Fade Away. He is also an exceptional chef. Without doubt the quality of the food in all his establishments is excellent. We enjoyed deep fried squid and crab to start followed by 3 fish 'en papillote' and an especially delicious prawn curry. On a Saturday evening it was packed, which is where the problems start. The room is tiny. In fact despite it's separate entrance on Pont Street is really an internal cafe space off the foyer of the Thomson hotel. So when the restaurant is full you're cramped and the tables are so close to each other that occaisionly it's easier to join the conversation of the table next to you and the conversation of your guest opposite. The kitchen and the service staff all do an excellent job but the space is just too small. Despite my reservations the restaurant was full of glamour and celebrity!
