Flat Iron brings more steak to Denmark Street with their own cows too

Flat IronFlat Iron in Soho is doing great business. But, if you've ever struggled to get into the massively popular steak joint (as we have), there's now another opportunity just down the road.

The second Flat Iron is opening on Denmark Street in July. It's taken over the site that used to be the Giaconda Dining Rooms, which used to be a recording studio in the 70s and home to David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, The Sex Pistols and many others at the time.

Flat Iron founder, Charlie Carroll, will be continuing the onsite butchery - this time using their own herd of traditional and rare breed beef cattle from Thirsk in North Yorkshire and cared for by third generation beef farmer Charles Ashbridge. Caroll says "Raising slower growing traditional breeds and finishing them properly takes more time, costs more money and for the majority of farmers is totally impossible commercially. We think it produces the best possible beef."

That beef will be on show at the new restaurant with a front-of-house marble butchery table that will also be the centre-point for the regular butchery classes and demonstrations for their diners too.

The restaurant itself will seat around 60 (the same as the Beak Street original), and the main menu will remain the same as before. So that's the flat iron steak and salad for £10, dripping cooked chips for £2.50, sauces for £1 and more besides. However, as they are now owners of a herd, they will also be doing more of the daily specials in a full range of steak cuts.

Drinks will remain the same - with cocktails now available at the table (as there's no separate bar space).

But there is a brand new special for dessert as everyone's favourite chocolatier Paul A Young is creating a special dessert for the menu. They're keeping details quiet, but it will apparently "focus around salt caramel combined with Van Winkle Bourbon and Madagascan vanilla."

Flat Iron opens early July at 9 Denmark Street, London WC2H 8LS. It'll be open from noon till midnight Monday to Sat, noon till 23.30 Sunday, for walk-ins only. For more information, follow them on Twitter @flatironsteak or visit their website.
