Champagne + Fromage shop and bistro puts down roots on Wellington Street

bubblesFollowing a pop-up venture just before Christmas, champagne collective French Bubbles has just opened a more permanent spot on Wellington Street. The 30 cover venue will focus on 'champagne et fromage' and feature a shop selling artisanal, limited production grower champagnes with an exclusively French fromagerie and a bistro.

Champagne + Fromage will have a cellar of 25 award-winning champagnes, from Blancs de Blancs to Blancs de Noirs. All are exclusive to the UK and available either to take home or drink in the bistro, alongside a menu of specialty French dishes and cheese. Take-away prices start at £25 for a bottle of Pertois-Moriset Sélection but that does cost a rather steep £50 to have to drink in the bistro. Top of the range is a £55 (£110 to drink in) bottle of WarisLarmandier 2004 Grand Cru.

To go with the fizz, a short menu in the menu includes tartines such as Auvergne – fresh figs with melted Fourme d’Ambert; the La Nordique - salmon gravlax with a Langres cheese mousse and a special champagne dressing; Champagne – pear with melted Langres cheese; and Montbélliarde – Montbélliarde sausage with Morbier and a confit of shallots. Alternatively you could try frogs leg tempura with Roquefort cheese, snails Raclette Forestiere or a chocolate fondant with Bleu des Basques cheese are available. The average price for a tartine and a glass of champagne is £20.

If you want to browse and buy, there's also a large range of Normandy cheeses to buy as well as charcuterie, terrines, rillettes, cassoulets, confits, soups and jams.

Champagne + Fromage will be open on Tuesday to Saturday from 11am – 11pm and Sunday from 11am – 8pm at 22 Wellington Street, London, WC2E 7DD. 0207 240 1604.
