The Hero in Maida Vale is the latest pub from The Pelican team

They've had huge success with The Pelican in Notting Hill, as well as The Bull in Charlbury. Now, Public House Group are getting ready to open another London pub, The Hero in Maida Vale.

As locals will know, this was recently known as The Hero of Maida, when it was revamped in 2018 with a Henry Harris menu. It closed in early 2024 but it's part of a group of pubs that the Public House Group team are going to be reviving, as we hear The Coach in Farringdon could be next.

The Hero's new set-up will keep the standard pub on the ground floor and add an open-fire grill room on the first, The Library on the second for "classic cocktails and bartender-in-residence nights" and a private events space up at the top. The team behind The Pelican, Phil Winser and James Gummer, have brought in chef Ed Baillieu to lead the menu, with dishes including:

  • Cheese & onion pie
  • Lamb chops with mint & peas
  • Four quarter of cod with brown butter

As for the look of the place, they're bringing it back to its heritage (the building went up in 1878) and are "paying homage to the building by stripping it down to its original features and leaving them bare." The Pelican has been a huge hit since it opened, so we are expecting this latest iteration of The Hero to do pretty well too.
